Privacy Policy
Understanding Tax is an informational site. No account, login, or personal data is required to read any explainer page or use any calculator.
Who is responsible for this data
Understanding Tax is run by Ian Billage, an individual, who is the data controller for the information described on this page. To ask a question or exercise any of the rights below, use the Contact page.
What this site collects
- Calculators. Figures entered into the Salary Calculator or any other calculator on this site are processed entirely in your own browser. Nothing you type into a calculator is ever sent to a server or stored anywhere, on this site or off it.
- Analytics. Umami is used to understand which pages are useful, in line with the goal of building the site around what people are actually searching for. Umami doesn't use cookies, doesn't track you across other websites, and only reports aggregate, anonymised figures, such as how many people visited a page and roughly where from. It can't identify you individually.
- Google Search Console. Used to monitor how this site appears in Google Search and to check for indexing problems. It places no tracking script on this site and collects no information about individual visitors; it only reports search-performance data Google already aggregates from Search itself, such as which search terms led to a page and roughly how many clicks it got.
- Hosting. This site is hosted by Netlify, which, like any hosting provider, may log standard technical data, such as IP address, browser type, and request timestamps, for security and performance purposes. See Netlify's own privacy policy for the specifics of what it logs and for how long.
- Contact. Getting in touch is done by email, not a form on this site. Whatever you send is only used to reply to you.
Nothing on this site is sold, and no personal data is shared with any third party beyond what's described above.
Cookies
This site sets no cookies. If anything is added in future that does, consent will be requested where required, and each cookie's purpose explained here first. Non-essential cookies won't be set without your consent.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law, you have rights over any personal data held about you, including the right to ask what's held and to request it be deleted. Use the Contact page for any request.
Changes to this policy
This page will be updated if what's collected or how it's used changes, for example if advertising, affiliate links, or other new services are introduced, along with the "last reviewed" date below.
